Installing aftermarket sideairbags??

OK. So i bought a 2nd hand yaris, not knowing if it came with side airbags or not. Well it didn't. So, i was wondering if the dealer can install this, and for how much? I know I can just buy another car, but i do have a few things on this car that I would like to keep this car. 5 sp. are very hard to find here.

Anything can be done if you have the money but it would probably be cost prohibitive

Looks like it would be pretty expensive (if it is even do-able) - Side curtain airbags ($611 x 2) and two sensors on each side ($180 x 2 + $115 X2) plus brackets, cables, etc.

Thanks for the positive response. I don't know if it will be cost effective, but atleast you provided me real world $ to back it up.

probably a new airbag control module as well, or at least some programming

NO!!! Don't mess with the safety systems in your car...ever. Dealer will kill you on that and is not advised.

Theoretically, I suppose it could be done, but I would not be worth the time or effort. No dealer would do it either. Air bags are very expensive, too...

fwiw a real world estimate is that a lot of the newer cars with the 2nd generation air bags are deemed a total loss when 2 or more are deployed....just wish I knew why....

I don't know if any aftermarket bags exist. That kinda thing is very controlled and depends on many variables (vehicle related). Can you imagine the lawsuits if something didn't work?

A federally mandated pair of explosives in my dashboard is enough for me. I can pass on the side bits!

Isn't the plastic different as well? As in, the b-pillar (or where ever the airbags are) are designed to break apart differently?

Well, basically my concern is all the accident threads on here. A side impact and i'm toast, i believe. If i convert my yaris to 90-100% track duties, i don't have to worry. We'll see what the wifey thinks about that choice in this recession.
I think both our jobs are secure, atleast that's what the CEO of my company assured me, and my wife works for a NPO, so she should be safe.

I really like the new jolt yellow, and have been considering a LB for some time now. We shall see.
