2009 Yaris KYB shocks NEED a boot
Maybe I am bit naive, but I found this out the noisy way yesterday. KYB shocks come without a boot, and one of my OEM boots was rusted onto the shaft of the old shock, so I researched online whether shocks NEED boots. All the sources I checked said no.
Upon test driving my bootless KYB shocks, the shafts promptly slid up into the upper opening by about 2 1/2 inches. Thankfully it didn't cause damage, just a lot of noise, but I learned that these shocks, MUST have the OEM style boots installed, the metal top acts as a washer to keep them in place. Just thought I would share! |

Now I'm trying to find a replacement for the rusted OEM boot, which is proving to be impossible. Does anyone know where to get one? Should I just use a washer instead?

doing this now, how did you remove the boot from the oem shock without destroying the top washer?

Is this for the rear shock? The Rear shock strut fits through a support tube (boot) (48750-52100, about $28 at the dealer) then through a rubber stopper (48752-52010,~ $8) below the the mounting plate. The strut is then captured by the top bushing, bushing retainer and lock nuts.

Those part numbers are valid for OEM parts. You should probably source the top bushing (48755-52010), bushing retainer (90201-10320), and lock nuts (94130-61000) from the dealer as well, given the amount of rust. Coat the cushion and the bushing with a liberal amount of syl-glide silicone lubricant before you reinstall it. The silicone will help the cushion and bushing stay where you put it
Make sure you've to the wheels on the ground before you torque down the top nuts- set the lower nut so you have about 15mm of three revealed on the strut, and then torque the top nut to 18 ft-lbs of torque. |

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. The thread illustrating my screw ups is stickified in this section.
