This is probably a dumb question but would like to ask anyway: What happens when a crank pulley, wp or alternator pulley fails on the road at speed..?

When the crank pulley goes your engine will overheat, necessitating a head gasket replacement - really if any of them goes you are screwed because the belt is no longer spinning the others.

My NST lite crank pulley has been working great for years however I'm not racing and have the stock rev limiter. My NST waterpump pulley though had a crack and a very very deep grove wore in from the belt and I replaced it with another NST pulley that was used.

What Jason said, plus the fact that pieces of metal could be flying around either in your engine bay, under your car, or on the road. In Jason's case, they were also winning.
