Break in period MPG

So I bought my '10 Yaris Sedan exactly 2 weeks ago. It had 10 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. It now has just under 1000 miles on it, and I've filled it up 4 times. Each time the MPG was right around 31-32mpg. The first tank was all city, the second was all hwy, the third was half hwy, half city, and the forth was all city. Is it common for new cars to get the same MPG on hwy and city at first? This is my first new car, I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. About how many more miles until I can really see what the MPG's will be?

Thanks. Oh yeah, I'm loving the new car.

I started getting better mpg's after about 25,000-30,000 miles. So it will be a while before the car is actually broken-in. As far as having the low mpg's, you have to remember that it is winter. Lower air temps = lower mpg's and you are also putting winter gas in your car right now.

From what i hear it does get better. Atleast after 10k miles i noticed a small improvement but thats when i started heavily modding so its all been downhill since then. I am hoping to see some improvement around 30k.

Year I have a 3 door hatch and my first fill up I got about 32 mpg.

Has anyone used a K&N drop in filter. I had a K&N on my Scion Xa and it dropped the economy a few points, the Xa has the same 1.5 L VVTi engine but weighed a little more.

Cold winter weather and the winter mix gas doesn't help MPG either.

Yeah I installed a K&N filter as I have had one in my Celica for years with out a single problem.

Don't expect anything dramatic with it though. It will just open up the top end a bit.
Personally I'm not too concerned with MPG and I go for performance. I frequently go for WOT.

clarkston! I'm originally from Spokane...

the yaris' mpg's drop like a rock once you drive faster than 65mph... and since WA highways often are 70mph, you can expect to get no better than about 35mpg at 70mph.
If you're on a slower highway like 55mph... you can expect to be in the high 30's or even in the 40's.

glide as much as you can in your city driving, and you should see your mpg's go up as well. 34mpg is the worst i've ever gotten on a tank and that was driving down through the Columbia river gorge towards portland. You're cold weather doesn't help at all either.... you'll notice your mpg's jump up significantly when temps go up, and when the gas is no longer oxygenated (does clarkston do oxygenated gas in the winter?)

For me personally, I think my improvements were about 90% due to my driving habbits changing. Read up about DFCO. I saw an instant 10% improvement when I started using DFCO instead of coasting in neutral. I bought my car in 12/07 and my first few tanks were 36mpg... after than I was looking at 40's. Now i get upwards of 46mpg in the summers and that is with 10% ethanol gas.

You can get better than 35 mpg @ 70 mph. The best mpg I ever got was 44, all highway @ 70 mph, summer gas, 32 psi. But it was 100+ degrees outside. The higher outside temps, the better mpg.

I have under 5k miles. Just changed the oil today to synthetic. Sedan 2009. I just dropped below 40 mpg overall about a mounth ago due to winter. I am still over 39 mpg overall. This Yasis has seen 90 mph on occasion. It has 15" wheels and a stick. Max mpg was near 44.

I still don't really buy the break in thing anymore. My best tank was my second one, I got 44 mpg.

Your 1st tank probably wasn't 100% full from the dealer. Usually when someone buys a new car, they baby it at first but as the months go by people generally start to drive it harder and harder. Maybe you were babying it more the 1st few weeks and you have slacked off since then.

I do believe in a break-in period. My new Jeep Cherokee (550 miles so far) got 13 mpg the first full tank.

Now, I'm approaching 17 and I do baby it since I can display the average gas consumption. I am hoping that I can eventually reach 20 but not too sure since EPA rating is 15 city, 20 hwy.

I'm glad I drive the Yaris 5 out 7 days a week.

I just traded in my 2008 2dr for a new 2010 5dr. The 2008 had an AT and no CC. I got 37.8mpg with very few miles on it driving a 200 mile trip at 80-85 mph for 3/4 of the trip and using AC for 1/3 of the trip. It had just over 11000 miles on it when I traded it in. My new Yaris is a 5 spd and I got 32 on my first tank which was 90% in town in February. I have no mileage complaints on either car. Sometimes I drive easy and sometimes I drive hard. I just know with my Yaris I am getting better mileage no matter how I drive than 90% of the people on the road and that includes some hybrids.

I love my Yaris.

I have had my 3 dr. lb for 16 days now and still have 5 of the 8 bars on the gas gauge left. With my 4 mile each way drive to work it is going to be a long time before my first fill up.
