canadian class action lawsuit

this lawsuit is in regards to the major auto makers in border states refusing to sell vehicles to canadian buyers.
there is the belief that there is collusion on the part of the auto makers to keep us paying more for cars here in canada.

everyone knows that our car prices in canada are inflated, especially since our dollar is near par with the u.s. dollar.
the yaris is probably a couple thousand more here than in the u.s..

apparently anyone can join in the suit if you've purchased a new car within the last two years.
toyota has not been named yet, but most likely will.

I'd love to find out where to sign up for this as I bought a few vehicles in this time frame. Anyone know where or how?

So whats the deal behind this? I just don't understand. You're not allowed to purchase cars from the US, if you're from canada?

We as Canadian(s) are legally not allowed to buy new cars from the states. Or at least according to Toyota USA. As well Canadian Toyota dealerships are not allowed to import and selling you a new car from the USA.

However you can buy used car, and go through the process listed on www.riv.ca

To give you an example:
Yaris RS = 19k (Canadian)
Yaris S = 16k (American)

WRX STI = 49k (Canadian)
WRX STI = 33k (American)

Don't forget that the S hb is far less kitted out than the RS. S= No 5-door, no ABS, no fogs, no spoiler, 60/40 only with power package (w/o alloys, standard build, but extra).
I looked in to purchasing a dealer used RS in Vancouver a while back, but at the time, exchange (18.5%) didn't make up for taxes (8.5%), duty (2.5%), importer fees ($400). Now with the Loonie at par....no way. I assume you'd pay higher duty, since every other Canadian tax is higher.
Good luck

NAFTA goes through my mind everytime the UPS guy asks me to pay duties. If Canada wants to keep business here, then we need to change pricing.

Yeah, and then only if it's really really really made in North America....meaning - we ain't the EU yet. HUGE issues trading between the US and CA. Pittiful, useless, counterproductive restrictions between best friends. It's like, ever have a crush on your best friend's sister? You may have every good intention and you're best friends afterall, but it still "ain't just exactly right".

I love this. It places the manufacturer in a catch-22 position. Either they fess up, and come up with substantial data as to the reason for the inflated price (of which they will not, they'll merely be transparent excuses), or the judge throws the book at them and makes them pay a substantial amount.

There are a few possible reasons why Canadians pay more than US citizens...

1. We don't have to comply with Kyoto regulations. They are costly. Canada signed on to Kyoto and is trying to comply.

2. We don't have a single payer health industry. Canada does.

These two alone would probably account for the price difference. I for one cannot see why Toyota or any other company would "gouge" Canadians.

1. Irrelevent.

2. My (extremely high) income taxes pay for that. If anything, lack of extended medical benefits as in the states should be result in a decrease in price.

I can understand prices being a little higher in a small, insignificant country like Canada, but we pay on average 16% more for everything. That's gouging. When I bought my BMW years ago, it cost 20% more in Canada vs the US, then pile on top of that 14% in taxes. What a joke. We take to much crap as Canadians. I've tried standing up to injustices in the past, starting petitions etc and hardly anyone else will do anything more than sign a petition even if they are pissed off at what's happening. We deserve to be gouged and screwed over until we stand up as a group and make things right.
