Question Sun Shades

Hey guys - I'm getting beat up in the Southeast sun this summer (100+ degrees). I'm worried about the dash of my new Yaris . Any recommendations for a good sun shade?

I have a custom fit one I got on Ebay. Paid about $30 for it.

Not trying to be critical, but, when the shade is attached to the windshield wouldn't that cause excess heat too the windshield?....or I could be over thinking it!.

Yes, it certainly can.
I started to use a sun shade for the first time in my Celica a couple of weeks ago. I bought it while ago but, never used it before.

I have a tint strip (anti glare) on top (inside) of the winshied which was installed about 8 years ago and was stiil pristine.

However, after ony two days sitting in the hot sun with the sun shade the tint strip was pealing off as the layers of the tint were seperating.

So, I went to the local tint shop to have it replaced. I told the tinter what had happened and he told me a sun shad will definately reflect a lot of heat back at the winshield and that was what certainly caused the tint strip to self destruct as it did.

I've thought about getting one, too. It doesn't get too bad in Wisconsin that often, but
lately it's been in the 80's. My cheapo thermometer was reading a high temp of 114 degrees F !!!

Are you talking about the really shiny sun shades that would reflect back against the
windshield? Years ago, I had some cheap cardboard folding thing that wouldn't stay up
no matter what I did. I see the newer ones can be reflective and softer, but don't look
like they would stay up there.

Most sun shdes are held in place by folding the car's sun visors down.

I love the fold up nylon shades you can buy for usually less than $10. They collapse into a nice circle you can tuck under the seat and have a reflective side to face the windshield. Temperature difference and protection for your car are huge in my opinion, but I have tinted side windows too. You do need the Jumbo size for the Yaris windshield or you won't get full coverage and the sun visor won't hold them in place.

I guess it has been a while since I have tried one, but I have seen many
that slide out from under the visor.

the purpose of the "shade" is to keep the sun primarly off of the dash, right?.

If this is the case, why not place the "shade" on the dash instead of hanging it from the windshield?.....just a thought.I would think the excess heat buildup forced upon the windshield "could" effect the weather stripping hence possibly causing leaks?.

Good point.

When I had the sun shade on my Celica I had my Yaris parked right next to it, both were in the sun.
I got into both cars within a minute of each other and I did not notice any difference in interior temps between them.
