May be farewell to my 2008 so how good are the 2017's
So with 377,000 miles on my girl she took a hit from behind by a big work truck. Took out the bumper, tailight and hatchback. My guess is the insurance company is going to total it with the miles it has on it. So I need another I can put 400,000 miles on. How are the 2017's as I may buy one with the closeout approaching. They seem to be listed as Yaris IA. I have an auto tranny now but am good with manual. Is the car as far as engine, etc. basically the same. I am more of a how it will last than how well it looks type guy. Let me know your thoughts as I am a die hard Yaris fan after my first. Yaris's never die they just get ate up one day

Sorry to hear this. The Yaris iA is NOT a Yaris. It is a rebadged Mazda 2. Toyota does still sell the real Yaris in hatchback form only. Seems more dealers carry the iA than the hatch. Mechanically the Yaris (not the iA) is pretty much the same as your 2008, so expect the same reliability. Don't be afraid to buy a used one. Rental agencies are a good source.

IMO, the iA is a Mazda and therefore none of the established Yaris experiences apply.

Yeah, forget the iA. The 2017 hatches are clearancing out now so you should be able to snag a good deal on one.

I'm not a fan of the Mazda-built (Mazda2) Yaris iA. I would definitely go with either a Toyota Yaris Hatch (SE!) or the (Made in Japan!) Toyota iM. Those are the ones at the top on my own list currently. I've already read about various transmission & mechanical issues in iA's that are not even a year old yet. Sad.

Thanks for the info. Big help. So is the 2017 Yaris L a base model Yaris and a "real" Yaris. Not looking for anything fancy. I have only found a couple of these within 150 miles of me. Lots of IA's, no SE's or iM's

Yes, the Yaris L hatchback is a real Yaris. That's what I have, a 2016. Love that car.

Yep, the Yaris L/LE/SE are all real Yaris, and almost mechanically identical to the original Yaris that was released in the U.S. in 2007. All the Yaris has had done since 2007 is various cosmetic facelifts and sheetmetal changes for the most part. The engine, drivetrain, etc. remain virtually unchanged. It isn't cutting edge technology, but it is bulletproof in terms of being tried-and-true reliable. The latest 2018 hatchback is also just another minor facelift of the same old trusty Yaris.

Great info everyone. I may go used or either sway to 2018. So the 2018 hatchback L and LE are pretty much like my bulletproof 2008? That is good to know. 2017's L, LE's are really hard to find as I have expanded my search even further out. Tons of iA's though.
I am looking forward to another Yaris but I have spent so much of my life in my 2008 it will be hard to say good bye. Never had a car that even came close to the miles I have gotten out of her with few problems and she still wants to go for more. |

There is a brand new 2 door L 5 speed Yaris at the dealer near me in Rockford, IL. Maybe flights into the airport here are cheap?

Rutherford, sorry to hear about your Yaris. With 377,000 miles, I'd say that little guy served you well. Good luck in your search for a new car (hopefully a Yaris).

Well I checked my odometer before it got a ride to the body shop for the adjuster and it made it to 378,454. It is still up in the air what will happen but I need another for sure. If they total it I may buy it back fix the tail light and drive it for a few months until I get another. The major damage is the hatchback but it didn't break the glass. Rear bumper some damage but no damage to the body other than that. If they want to fix it I may keep the cash and keep going with it but either way I need a replacement for the next 378,000 miles. So manual or automatic that is the question. I had an automatic but I like manual too. Most of my miles are highway but I do cruise up in the mountains too. Which will go the distance best? Kinda leaning to getting a 2018 L just your basic Yaris. I stopped off by the dealership and they say they dont really keep them on the lot as they don't sell many of them. They said they can get me a 2018 L though in about seven days so at least they seem to be readily available.

Too bad you're so far away, I'd have a go ghettoing it back together before it gets scrapped
