Looks like a screwdriver sticking into the floorboard, and judging from the paper on the floor, this picture was taken while it was at a mechanic. Definitely don't have one in my car...

And yes you can do better than 12km/liter (or 28 miles per gallon). Read all the stickies at the top of this forum:

edit: jinxor beat me to it while I was getting the link ><

that's 8.3 liters/100 km.... not the worst by any means but not great. In city traffic I average 7.9 liters/100 km (38 imperial mpg)....you are getting 33 imperial mpg.

Try driving more smoothly....

are your trips short ones? If so that will drive your mpg down.

the serious answer:

It is an emergency flare. In case your car breaks down at night and you have no flashlight you can open it and it will burn with a bright light to attract attention.

As for your fuel consumption, seems acceptable, what engine is in your car?

Well at least one person was being serious to the question. I agree that it's a roadside flare and it can be used if you have emergency or a vehicle break down.

I'm guessing the thing on the windshield is the sale sign with the price on it. That's how it usually looks in Japan. My question is this, who the hell is that small that needs the front seat up that close!

i dont think that is a flare. its sticking out of the floor. i dont think a flair would be in such a fixed position. flares are usually uniformly round from end to end. that tapers at one end. looks like a screwdriver handle sticking into something.
