Question I am pretty sure its old news, but I'll ask anyway.

i tried search and no luck, so I am asking this question.

Why is my 07 yaris is rated at 40 mpg highway and the newer models are at 36 mpg?

I believe it was in 08 that they changed the EPA/MPG rating system to take into account cold weather climates and altitudes. See below:

it also usedd to bbe that the would put the car on a dyno with a fan in front of it... the new rules actually put the car on a road...

The auto makers would also design the car to provide the best EPA mileage and not real world.

Go to the official source. But the government changed how they did the measurements, or in reality, they changed how the estimated real world performance, since all the do is divide and use a percentage of the absurdly ridiculous numbers they get from their fake test.

Also the Yaris from that Year was always in high demand, Reminds me of the buyback from Toyota when they sent them letters asking if we wanted to sell the car back to them

The old test used a professional driver. The new test which is currently used and affects 2008+ models takes into account real-word scenarios e.g. driving above speed limit, terrain, weather, more aggressive driving, etc.

The long explanation: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510

On fueleconomy.gov when you compare the 2007 and 2008 Yaris you'll see both the old and new EPA rating for the 2007 whereas the 2008 only has one rating.

maybe the extra airbags have added enough weight to knock off a few tenths.

They did change the test to reflect more realistic use by a more 50% tile user. At 41-42 mpg, I must be a damn good driver.

um, the test was all computer controlled, then estimated, rounded off, and a percentage cut off. From what I understand it is the same, just a higher percentage taken off the top. Still has no relation to reality.
