Scion iQ review

We spent a week with the '12 Scion iQ and found it to be a cool little car.

Would get the "C" before the IQ . Just seems to be the smarter move .

I really wanted to love this car as a future replacement for my Yaris, but it's a no go till the price falls to 10-12K as people thought it should cost. Now for my test drive/findings rant. There is but one interior light in the whole car above the rear view mirror-there is non in the trunk area. The speedo and tach. don't back light during the day unless the headlamps are on and are difficult to read especially with sunglasses on. The top of the radio console that looks like darth vadars helmet is super shiny reflecting everything including the bright sun-and toyota has always done a good job of glare reduction-not on this feature. No spare tire-no piece of mind. Seat set to high and has no height adjustment. And the windshield cuts off too short at the top so you have to bend down to see stop lights if you're the first one there. The CVT is not bad and I don't mind the engine revving for the most part. Engine layout is similar to Yaris, but the intake manifold covers the spark plugs totally, and I have yet to locate the oil filter. No glove box, just a clunky tray under the seat-and where do I get access to the cabin filter-I've always raved about toyotas easy to get to filter behind the glove box. It drives fine and is stable on the freeway because it's so wide, but this car offers noting other than a novelty. Very disappointed and will be checking out the Prius C even though I'm not crazy about hybrid batteries and all the complexity. And what gives with the IQ's fuel mileage-even new owners are shocked at how low they are getting in the low 30's. I get low 40's with my 5 speed yaris. Ok rant done-but that's what I walked away thinking after getting to test drive one all by myself for half an hour.

None of the character of a Fiat (spoken like a guy who remembers the Originals), pushing for part of the Smart market, I guess, but I suggest watching that thing on slippery surfaces (spoken like a guy who has spent most of his life on short wheelbases).

My buddy was coasting along in his Yaris on a snowy road. A Smart came up behind him, and changed lanes... away he went. Buddy sez he never, ever, saw a vehicle spin so fast in all his life! If there was ever a reason to walk past a vehicle, short wheelbase is the It. Rain or snow is the Number One enemy!

I would like to have an electric version of the IQ for local driving but that's about it. I'm not a big fan of the new Yaris but I think it gives you a lot more for the money.
