Bigger Tires
Have a big question on tires...I've read many posts on tires and I'm still a little confused on tires sizes.
My car is stock everything and I'm considering putting bigger tires on my car. I'm also on the cusp of adding a trailer hitch and getting a light duty trailer to haul my kayaks (getting them off the top of my car). I don't plan on lifting or lowering it. My current tire size is 185 60-15 What sizes would you recommend? Last edited by gumby002; 10-03-2014 at 02:00 PM. |

Bigger as in diameter or width, or both?
For reference, I'm on Falken Ziex ZE-912 205/50R15. They feel very sticky, but a bit numb. I think any real difference will all depend on the tire brand and model. The OEM 15" tires are great, though. I wouldn't change them if I'm not lowering. |

I currently have Falken Ziex's on the car now.
Bigger as in diameter. I'm not planning on lowering at all; I do a lot of fishing from my kayak and am on dirt roads that sometimes get wet when the tide comes in and I want to be a little more off the ground....that and i like a bigger diameter tire look. Bigger Tires
You can try 195/65R15. I don't think that will rub. I've had 195/60R15 which gives half an inch more ground clearance and no issues with the stock rims.
But instead, why not lift the car instead? |

Great Question.
I've never thought about lifting it. What kind of job are we looking at to do that? If I did that, wouldn't I also want to put bigger tires after the lift? |

I like what you are showing me with those big boy tires and that's with a lowering kit....right?
I'm not much of a mechanic, so if its something that requires some extra pieces and taking things apart, I'm not really wanting to do that. Simple things i can do, like changing out the water pump. Can we look at bigger tires first and then if i get a wild hair in the next year or so, visit the lift kit? So, the question is...how big can i go with what i'm looking to do with having a trailer hitch and trailer? |

Gumby: I've been offline for some time. Sorry for the delay.
I did have the 1975/75-14 on there. But it was just for testing clearance and what not. I couldn't drive on them because the wheels needed a spacer to clear the front brakes. The rear was okay. Also, I only had ONE tire, since I wanted to make sure it all cleared prior to buying all 4 tires. In that pic, yes, the Yaris was on lowering springs (Micro Image springs). I have since went back to stock height, and added some firestone helper springs in the rear. If you're running stock height, I don't see much issue with running this tire, EXCEPT maybe slight rubbing at full turn and that might depend on the wheel offset you got with. As far as how big? If you're on stock height, I'd stick to the 195/75-14 size. This size is about 25.5" and I believe the 215s start getting up there to about 27" - A size I wouldn't try without a lift. I'll be buying the other 3 tires soon as I start moving some parts around. I have to sell off some wheels, some tokico blues, and the rear sway bar. Surely, I'm forgetting something. |

I have 185/65R15 on my liftback.
Does not rub at all, except at full left steering lock with 3-4 passengers; The back of the left tire rubs the chassis. (Although my car is lowered by 1")

Based on what I've read, my offset is 45 (OEM 15" rims).

Got new tires yesterday.
195/60/15 not quite as big as i wanted to go, but they fit in my budget quite nicely at $364 installed. Falken Pro G4 A/S |
