Just acquired a second hand RS style hatch spoiler (that's the little lip spoiler, not the big wing).
Is just 3M tape sufficient to hold this sucker on? I really don't want to drill holes into the hatch unless absolutely necessary.

I wouldn't trust just the tape. If someone accidentally leaned on the spoiler it could damage the tape.

Mine has been on with the 3-M tape for over a year. It is NOT kept in a garage and just went through a pretty cold winter. It's as secure now as it was last summer.

Mine is attached with just 3M tape as well. Has been on for almost a year. No wiggles or anything. I even use it to hold on to when I stand on the back bumper to wash the top of the car. Seems as solid as the day I put it on.

3m tape will be fine, its such a small spoiler....as long as its the true 3m tape...

wow... I can't believe you can get away with 3M tape... those strips aren't rated for much weight.

When i have my ford escort hatch years ago. I think it was a 96. I purchased a roof spoiler that i stuck to the hatch glass with 3m Tape. When i sold the car years later it was still good. He brought the car back to me to asked me to help remove it caues he was getting his windows tinted. ANd we had a heck of a time trying to remove it. Required a huge amount of force to tear it off. And once he was done just bought a roll of 3m tape and put it back on.

Ask yourself... WWTD?
What would Toyota do? I can't imagine they would put a spoiler on with tape. |

Well there isnt much other options. You cant screw it into the glass and you cant really glue it. U would need a special type of ahesive.
My rear bumper guard was attached with 3m tape. |

FYI i did have a wind deflector visor for my acuras sunroof. One day i was driving down the freeway i heard this god awful rattaling and then this loud clunk. I looked in my rear view mirror and it ripped the screws and clips off and flew away. Luckly it landed in the shoulder area and there just happend to be no cars behind me at the time.
While my ford escorts spoiler held on by 3m tape never had that happend =) |

Be sure the 3M tape that you use is specifically called 3M VHB tape.
If you still have doubts about this VHB tape, see this from Discovery Channel (youtube video). Actual footage starts at about 1:20 in |

I love momentum.

If you clean both the area the spoiler is attaching to, and the area under the spoiler REALLY well, and use some heat, it'll be fine. That 3M stuff holds INCREDIBLY well.
I had small pieces of it hold door molding on my old GTi for two years. It never budged. |

Just do it the right way and put two tiny holes in your car. Don't be responsible for a motorcyclist's death.

the tiny lip spoiler wont come off w/ a band of 3m tape around the edge of its attachment....
