Made a really big boo-boo....
I am so pissed right now.
I accidentally rubbed off clearcoat off the back hatch. I was using a sponge that had goo gone on it still and didn't realize it until too late. Do you guys think some clear coat polish or something like that would work? Or do I need to call the body shop tomorrow ![]() Any help would be great. |

If it were me I'd go get a professional opinion (a body shop you like or know of)first before doing anything else. Tell them what happended and they should be able to figure out if you really removed clear coat or if you just made it hazzy. They should be able to offer some advise-that's what I'd do.

Did you try waxing the area, to bring back the shine?

Get some dish soap, why you ask,to clean out any residual googone from the area, then get some polish and a buffer and give it a buff,if that amkes the shine come back then add more polish then some wax.....I regularly use rubbing compound on my cars and can always polish back any hazing in a matter of minutes, the clearcoat should of held up fine to googone,I use it to remove tree pitch at times.

Maybe all you have is some of the muck that the goo gone took off and looks bad. You could try buffng/waxing the area and maybe all is good.. Good luck ! |

Thanks for the replies guys. I got some ultimate compound and nxt.and it looks somewhat better.
Let this be a warning to all - goo gone does in fact remove clear coat. I guess i will find some better polish than meguiers. Any recommendations? Thanks! |

I love momentum.

Are you sure it was the goo gone, or was it the fact that you were using a sponge that had an abrasive surface (or had trapped grit in the surface)?
I've used Goo Gone a number of times and have never seen it removed clear coat. |

I don't think a regular kitchen sponge (the kind with the soft and rough sides) would do that by itself.
It had to be the combination of the goo-gone and the rubbing. |

Goo gone wont damage cured automotive clearcoat. What happens is it strips off all the wax completely off the surface. Also the rubbing might scratch and haze the clearcoat depending on what type of rag you use. Typically rubbing compound afterwards and wax will correct the issue. If you went below the clear coat for example your car is red you will see red staining on your rag. If not the clear coat is still intact.

Yeah if it was slightly black afterwards then you defiantly took clear coat off. If you dont clean and wax it frequently now eventually now that the clear is gone and thin in surrounding areas when it starts to rain water will get in under and the clear will start to lift and bubble. Then it will start to peel. The best way now is to get a can of clear coat and just spot treat the area. Wet sand and polish the area till its blended in.
If you dont feel comfortable doing something like that i would try craigslist for a mobile paint doctor. |

I think I might just be real careful with the spot for now. If I notice anything I will take it to the body shop.
reworking the small lb area shouldn't cost too much. Stupidity is expensive... |

The rough side of a kitchen sponge is quite abrasive, generally as abrasive as 000 steel wool. Even more abrasive if it has been impregnated, such as an S.O.S. pad.

Maybe you can get the sponge company to pay to fix the clear coat, if it said scratchless, just leave out the part about the Googone... or maybe each company can pay half?
I bet you can write a letter saying you were dissatisfied and they send you coupons to buy more of their same product. |
