Sell or not?

Alright guys need some advice here. I'm going to be going away to college in the fall.

My parents are paying tuition etc, but I need to pay to live up there. So basically I'm going to be broke for the next 2 years straight. I'm hoping to save up 4 grand by the end of the summer to help pay for the place while I'm up there

All the while I have my yaris, I love my yaris with a passion and really can't imagine selling it, until now of course.

I have $9,500 left of payments on it. With 10,000miles on it.

Should I suck it up and work my ass of effecting my happiness and grades? And in 3 1/2 years have my car paid off. With maybe 40,000 miles on it.

Or sell it and get a piece of shit car for now? Make some money off it, no more car payment....

My rent is going to be $500 a month and the car is $273

I really can't pay that kind of money while doing school full time.

So what are your thoughts?

get some better idea of what you can actually sell it for first. You will probably not be getting enough to make it worht it. Also, i was looking at your numbers, if you have 4k when you starts school and first semester is 5 months long

It looks to me like just to pay rent food and for your car you will need to make 1500 bucks over christmas and make 175 bucks a week. Thats going to average out at like 20 hours a week probalby, depending on your wages up there. I work alot myself in college, and its possible, but it can also hurt you. And that is without paying for gas or any special meals, fun. I dont think its going to work out unless you can get some additional help from your parents. Perhaps they can hold your car and use it themselves for a year while you work just a little bit, but not as much as you would have to, in order to save up money and pay for it yourself later? Or have them pay some of your food?

just curious...why did you decide to buy a new 07 car?

Well when I bought the car I wasn't planning on going away for college. Now a year later I'm going for the better education. Have a very clear goal when I got the car I didn't at all.

I'm sure my rent will be able to help me out a bit for food and such.

Have you applied for financial aid, you might qualify for grant money to help you out.

that's true... and who knows, they might have dropped in price, or have more options that you'd prefer... It's be a heartbreak to sell it for sure, but it might be worth it.

I go to college, pay for a Yaris, and work Part time, and it's doable. All with a 3.67 GPA.

It's all up to you really: are you ready to work and study? If you are, go for it;otherwise, don't. It's not easy, but it's worth it. And in any case (even if you sell it) it looks really good on your resume if you work and study.

Screw school. Staring the rat race 1 year early (once you're done with College) isn't going do anything for your mental health in the long term. I'd take a year off (before starting College), get a tolerable job, work lots of hours and pay off Yaris before starting school.

You're going to want to start school with the least amount of loose ends as possible and the Yaris is one of them. Obviously, you need a car, since you're considering trading down to an older used car, but who's going to pay the repair work for the old car once it brakes down or will it be reliable enough to handle the commute? (more loose ends).

Also, taking a year off can be a bargaining chip. If the parents want you to start ASAP, perhaps they can handle the monthly while you're away to school.

Where should I start, autotrader, ebay, want ads?

What do I do about all the crap I put into it.

I have dropped it and put a amazing stereo in it. Worth around 2 grand new, $1,000 used.

Should I put the stock springs in it and take out the stereo? Or just try to sell it as is with a higher price?

What should I start the price at its got 11,000 miles on it. Only a a few unseen scratches underneath the front bumper. Sadan, Flint Mica, Power options, Tinted windows, alarm, car starter.

any ideas?

You have a very clear goal???....hate to say it but your goal must not be so clear if you're asking us!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

financial aid is the key. even if you dont get grants (and you probably wont if your parents can afford your tuition, unless you guys do some tax fraud, but thats a whole other topic), school loans are pretty much the best loans you'll ever get. flexible/generous payoff schedules and pretty decent rates. shit, i've known people who used school loans just to play the stock market, with very impressive results in the late 90s (damn tech craze). if you dont wanna sell your soul for the next decade or two, then i suggest scrapping the car, living really close to campus, and just walk and/or shuttle it. if the college has a decent social scene, you wont really need you car anyways. my civic sat in a parking lot for 4 years during college, and this is in los angeles. there were enough rides going around for everyone, and most of the time we'd just be passed out at someone's dorm/college apt. in a city that is notorious for cars being an absolute necessity, i wasted 4 years worth of campus parking permits ($1650 total) for a car i didnt even drive...

The ultimate student vehicle! 400$/year to insure (for me), under 2K to buy used, reliable and easy on gas! I just bought a Yamaha Vino for my wife to go to and from work :) I even like to drive it myself, even though I know it's hard to look cool on one lol

I drove some real crappy cars while I was in school.

If it were me, I'd part it out, sell it stock and get a $3,000 Corolla or Camry.

Once you graduate and get the cool job, you won't even notice the car payments in your budget.
