Question replacement tires for toyota 7 spoke alloy's

Yesterday ,I hit a rock (cantalope size) that the p/u in the next lane threw over in front of my Yaris at the last second , blew the sidewall & bent the Toyota alloy (7 spoke) on the drivers rear , the rock was rolling across lanes ...i was doing about 45 mph ...

Soo i'm replacing the wheel as I like the 7 spokes ,

but i was thinkin' i upgrade the tires to the best i can get ..

I need something that is well handling in the WET as we get winter storms here all winter long .
the stock tire size is 185/60r15
.........................................can I go up to a 195/60r15 ??

Has anyone got an opinion on what's the best tire out there in that size ???

.. I like the Michelins but they have had many recalls as of late on the rain tires of theirs ,I'm not sure i want to go with them anymore ..

Well, most upgrades are to 205/55/15.

But, you could easily go up to a 195/60/15. That's just 2% taller than the 185's.

In fact, there's a Yaris HB I see around here that's running 205/60/15's. Sounds kinda tall (+4%) at first, but it's not really. The 205's certainly fill the wheel wells nicely... and they don't look oversized at all. They actually look way better than the tiny 185's.

Anyway, if you think about it, a 205/60/15 is less than 2% taller than the OEM 205/45/17! So, you're still within the recommended 3% margin of Yaris HB OEM tire sizes.

As far as wet weather tires, I thought Michelin made some of the best ones, but if they're having quality problems, you may want to pass on them.

Look on the tirerack.com website. All the tires they offer are rated for Hydroplaning Resistance and Wet Traction. Maybe that can help you decide.

With 195/60's, you'll be travelling at 61.2 when the speedo is reading 60.

With 205/60's, you'll be travelling at 62.4 when the speedo is reading 60.

As far as performance issues are concerned, look at it this way:

195/60/15's are almost exactly the same height as 205/45/17's.

205/60/15's are almost exactly the same height as 215/45/17's.

205/45/17's are OEM, and many Yaris owners have upgraded to 215/45/17's.

So, the question is, are you really oversizing?

Anyway, minimal (within that 3% margin) oversizing won't actually degrade performance or increase mechanical wear to any significance.

Cool
...................thanx i wuz confosed by all the #'s

going by the Schwarzer Yaris Fuhrer's tire & wheel chart these will work
i'm gonna go with 205/50/15 BF Goodrich Traction TA's ...... as i have ABS

.... they are rated over all the best for wet/ dry/ preformace / mileage / handling by three different rating site
////////& most important Sears ($86.00)has loads of that size in stock as i can't run around on that skinny fake tire long

Yeah... the T/A's appear to have a good wet weather rating.

205/50's are almost 3% undersized... which is okay. But, if you're not lowered, they will look even more miniscule than the 185/60's. I wouldn't install them on my car at stock ride height.

***BTW, you can get BFG's in 205/55/15. They'll be exactly the same height as the OEM 185/60, so you'll be fine with ABS, if that is your concern. I think you will be happier with this size rather than the 205/50's

if i'm gonna have to by a new tire any way
then i'm buyin a whole new set as I'm not happy with the stock tire ...... (they'rt bad ) but I want the best rain tire I can get out there & with the BF Goodrich T/A Traction's being the best rated rain & as a highest rated preformace tire also it's a no brainer not to get them ........

I'm a firm believer in good tires as that's what's on the road is the tires ,

you could have the killer app. in sways, springs & struts but it's all crap if yer running shit tires

i'd love to lower the car but , this is what i feared about the roads in Cali ,had i had a lowered car it (the Rock) would have tore-up a mess of shit under the car

seems that Michlein's are crap now days do a Google on the rain tires & y'll see there way many sites that complain about them & numerios recalls

thanx guys Y W rocks ..................

205/55R15 please.
with 195/50R15, you are travelling about 5% slower when speedo is reading 60mph
i have 195/55/R15 and is about 1.2% slower when speedo is reading 60mph.

205/55R15 works with 5" wide rims, but make sure you have at least a 6 or 6.5. or it will look really buldgy.

oh, and to answer your main question, yes you can go with 195/60R15 as stated by kimona. but i DOUBT sears will install them for you unless you already run on oversized tires. (i've had really hard time to get tires installed on my Swift a while back when i was looking for 175/65R14... stock size was 165/65R14).

Sears was great with 205-55r-15's their computer said it was OK !!

all I can say about the BF Goodrich Traction T/A"s is WOW WOW !! what a difference ..it's like night to day over the Goodyear's that were stock .. No more road noise ! & the handling is to die for ! They really made the car very stable ..... that size made for a COOL beefy look to my yaris HB ... I could feel the difference even before I left the parking lot & it WOW when I hit the FreeWay >>> i LOVE great tires & these are some of the best I've ever bought THANX to all who helped me out on this ! >>> KUDO's to Kimona yer the BEST ! I'll post some PIX
