Whats the big deal with 5-lug applications on small cars?

I've noticed that a few of the yarii ive seen have 5-lug wheels instead of 4. Now the car is relativly light, small engine, and the wheels are usually under 18 inches. Is this something someone does to there car to get more "street cred?" Is this necessary, or are these people just doing it for the kicks?

um, unless theyve done conversion to scion xD brakes, i doubt any yaris's have 5 bolt wheels....theyre all 4x100

so if people are doing 5 bolt conversions, its likely just to say theyve done it because theres not that big of a reason to convert your yaris to 5 bolts unless youre racing or something...

In case you need to carry more than 2 tons in the Yaris.

If people are spending money on these conversions, why did they buy a Yaris if they can afford to throw money away?

I've also heard that 5-lugs have more wheel choices than 4-lugs.

I believe another reason is that Brembo does not make a BBK for a 4x100 pattern. Those who want the distinction of wearing Brembo's have to covert to 5 bolt.

Sometimes, you buy a cheap base car and then throw the money at it that you saved to get it modded just the way you want it.

If I bought a $23,000 car, it would be nice but not have everything exactly the way I want. By the time I modded it, that would bring it up to $27k or more. Then someone would say, "why didn't you just buy a $27k car?"

Absolutely. But this particular "mod" is, imo, a waste and not really a mod at all. There's plenty of 4-bolt wheels available to choose from. I imagine this conversion would cost 100's of dollars. Perhaps the cost of 3-4 wheels themselves.

You're right that there are plenty of 4-bolt wheels available. I was just thinking they would do that 1) to be unique or 2) to install a Brembo BBK.

I know there are plenty of wheels available for 4-lugs, but I believe there are more options out there for 5-lugs. I know some of my Suby and Evo buddies have rims that are not offered in 4-lug patterns. Also, there are sub categories in that itself. Some wheels are not offered in 4x100, but only in 4x114.3 patterns.

Also, I know the Honda guys convert to 5-lugs do accommodate Type R rims. For the Yaris folks, I'd think either to get different wheel options, or like you guys said, just to say the have done it.

My friend with a 240 converted his car from a 4-lug to a 5-lug to be able to have some 3-piece Advans (the split three-spoke ones).

That's Right.. If you look a eBay for example most of the nice and big rims are 5 lugs.. I used to like a set of 20" rims they were really nice but I couldn't find them in 4lug so I got a set of 18".

Well, since we're talking about the Yaris/small cars with 4-lug patterns, 20 incher's would never fit anyway. I think the biggest 4-lug is probably 18's.

I know of one member (banned now) who had 20's on his LB. I don't think his was lowered tho.

You probably can't turn though, lol. And you must need rubber band tires.

Anything over 18" on a Yaris is ridiculous. Actually, 18's are a bit too big themselves. 17's are perfect.
