Stupid pre-lit Christmas tree...

So, I'm putting up my tree and notice that about a quarter of the lights are out halfway between the middle and the top of the tree. Do I have to take a new bulb and try EVERY SINGLE out light until I find the one that is putting the rest out? What if it's more than one? How will I know?

tis the season! If you can't find an obvious bulb that has burned out, I would try and remove that section and replace it with a new one. Might save you hours of frustration! But usually you can tell a burnt bulb if you shake it and you hear a tiny rattling noise, or if the glass covering is discolored.
Hope that helps in any way possible!

Thank you! I started pulling each one out and doing process of elimination but after a little while realized it could take forever. I can't remove that section because it's not a full section..weird..so I just threw a spare set of lights on there. If I don't say anything, I'm not sure if anyone will notice? =) And if they're nice, they won't say if they do! lol

you can get a bulb checker at the store.. that way take the bulb out test it then fix it.

rather than taking it out putting in another one and taking that one out ..

Yep girlie way. Quicker way. We don't care how it works, just that it does!

If the lights are wired in series, one bad bulb will cause an entire section to not light.
If the lights are wired in parallel, one bulb will not cause the string to go out, only one bulb will not light. This is one reason for some lights being higher priced; parallel lights contain more wire thus are more expensive.

Sadly, if the lights you are using are in series, it would take a long time to find the culprit...so fixing it "the girly way" was a good choice :)

Just as a test.... pull ONE good buld froma a section that does work...... if all the bulbs go out then it is in "series" and I would just string all new lights.

If only a section is out it could be a broken wire or connection so be carefull if you look for it.

Get it working before we all jump into our cars and come over ......... we will go Clark Griswold on ya!!!!

Lisa have you seen Deck the Halls with Danny Devito and Matt Broderick? Worth watching at this time of the year.
