drop/rub limits?

I knwo this has been discussed a bunch before, but I still cant' seem to get a definitive answer, if there is such a thing, so I'm going to go all "noob" on y'all.
Will a 215/40/17, mounted on a 17x7 +42mm, rub with the NF210's, in typical daily driving? I helped a friend install some used TRD's from a Scion (supposedly the same part# as the Yaris) on his yaris with similar size tires/rims, and his drop was almost 2", and they rubbed pretty easily on cornering and dips. OEM struts, cut bumpstops. I don't want this, but do want a mild (1") drop to close the wheel gap.

I understand that some rubbing on very hard cornering and large dips is almost unavoidable on a dropped vehicle, but I really could only tolerate a minimal amount. Is this realistic, or am I going to need a different tire size to get what I want?
