I hear only treble from one of my door speakers...

Hey everyone, I did a stereo install last spring on the Yaris and everything went well. Last night, though, my driver's door speaker was only outputting treble, no mids. I don't know if it had anything to do with the cold (it was 13F out) but I found it strange that the tweeter apparently was able to be heard but not the woofer. The tweeter and woofer are found in the same chassis, they are not component.

Does that mean that my headunit's amp is fine? Do I have a damaged speaker? Did the rubber surround freeze or something? I can't think of anything that would cause such a strange occurrence.

I hate to think I have to bust open my poor Yaris' door again, especially in this brutally cold weather. Any info is appreciated.

your probably going to have to check all connections, i doubt the woofer or spider froze. is the speaker hooked up by one pair or two pairs of wire, where is it terminated first, woofer or tweeter. is it terminated by a crimped terminal ending, or simply wrapped around the terminal on the speaker. if it's wrapped around, you might want to solder it on.

i suggest u take it out and bring it inside recut some wire and hook it up to some amp/avr you have inside your house; that might answer some questions (new wire, some other amp, warmer temp) and help you narrow it down a bit if the speaker itself is messed up, and keep you somewhat warm in the process, hah. good luck!

last note: on my auxillary connection, it sometimes dumps out the left side speaker for trebble only, it was due to a faulty stereo jack from the aux to my portable player. did u test this with the FM radio or CD?

could be a few reasons for why it's doing it... my bet would be the connection on the mid is no longer present... voice coil could've burned, tinsel lead may have snapped (from over driving the speaker), the coil on the mid may have gotten too warm, and the glue failed, thus causing a huge mess of wire in the voice coil gap and in effect causing the mid to cease like a motor with no oil.

Probably blew out the speaker...

The car before my last car (1983 Chevy Celeb), I thought the speakers were dieing on it.. Bought a set of speakers and then went to replace my old speakers.. Popped the cover off the door and to my surprise, the reason the speakers weren't working well was because there were absolutely covered in millions of little shards of rust..

The rust was magnetically attracted to the speaker!! I couldn't even get them off with my hands, best I could do was push it around.. Took a screwdriver and was able to wipe them off with that since they stuck to the screw driver as well!

After that, speakers played fine and they were like 18 years old at the time..

So yea, take the speakers out and visually inspect them.. Any rips on the speaker surface or anything magnetic that can be pulled into the speaker can cause problems with bass..
