idle rpms up and down...
wondering if this is normal or not.
When I'm in nuterel at a stop the rpms fluctuate every couple of seconds anywhere from .5 to 1 rpms. This is still after the car is well warmed up. could it be the break in period still? only 300k so far. anyone else have this on their yaris? |

it's normal, nohting to worry about, basically just the engine doing this to help keep clean emissions

Mine will fluctuate between 750 and 500. I've been told that is normal.

with OEM rpm cluster (Canadian model), the rpm stays at 600rpm when engine is warm, with no fluctuations.

It is NOT normal for your idle to fluctuate that much.
My car is still pretty brand new, it has around 500 km on it. After warmup, my idle is pretty much rock solid with the needle sitting around 500 rpm, a little bit below. What you're mentioning is what used to happen with my old Honda Accord that had over 250k on it the idle would go from about 750 - 2000 rpm back and forth non-stop i dont know what the problem was as I got rid of the car cuz i didn't want it anymore....but i know it was a problem |

Occasionally, I'll notice my tach fluctuate a little at the lights while in neutral from between 400rpm to 600rpm. But it rarely happens and seems to occur when driving condition has changed, otherwise it's normally steady. Like, when I came back from a 2hr driving trip from the highway while averaging 90mph and when I was back in the city, the rpm was a little twitchy until engine got used to the more sedate city cruising.
However, fluctuating from 500rpm to 1000rpm all the time seems a little extreme. Perhaps you should try using premium fuel at a popular gas station until the car gets a good brake-in. If you haven't taken it on the highway, then opening the engine up a little on the highway might smoothen things out. |
