Used Yaris: 2011/previous vs 2012/later

Hi all, it is fantastic to have an whole forum about Yaris.
Looking to buy a used Yaris for my wife to commute to work, around 10 miles per day.

I would like to go with a 4cyl 1.5L Petrol as I think in the long terms does better than the 1.3L.

I saw the 2012 series had a bit of improvement on design and also changed the engine (from NCP91R to NCP131R). Should I stick with the older models or the new ones are good too?

I read on the forum I should stay away from 2007/2008 models (peeling and few issues on the 2008). I am based in Australia, I assume the series are the same?

When is supposed the timing belt to be changed?
