Flat Key

I have an 08 hatchback with manual locks, and have always kept a flat key in my wallet for every car I've owned since I got one with a mid-80s BMW I bought in Germany back in 1995.

I am having a hard time finding anyone with flat keys that will fit the Yaris. I've been to Lowe’s and Home Depot, WalMart as well as a few auto parts stores, and I can’t find anyone who has flat key blanks for a Toyota!

I've been told that the Yaris keys have chips in them, but as I don't have an alarm or ignition disabler, I have my doubts.

Also, please don’t recommend the dealer, as I am trying to keep this under $40!

Cheers! M2

Are you just wanting a key to get into your door in case you lock your keys in your car?

if you need a blank non rubber head (read flat key) p/m me and I'll see what i can do...

as long as the car does not have an ignition immobilizer then you can use a flat key...

I also keep a spare flat in my wallet. I just went to the dealer and they cut me a new key for like 7 bucks.

When we bought our Yaris the only way you could get a non-flat key was if you got keyless entry.

Just go to your local hardware store, I made mine for $1.99. As long as there is not a chip in the key it's super cheap.

90% of the Yaris key systems are NOT chipped keys. You can get a key cut just about anywhere. Buy a regular cut key and cut the plastic off. It will fit in your wallet better and still open AND start the car.

Do not let them tell you that a base yaris has a chipped key.... that's BS.

depends on your region, in canada, EVERY yaris has an immobilizer regardless of options and trim level.

When I have keys made I see my local lock shop.
They do a much better job than the schmucks at home depot.

if you check your manual, they differentiate the designs of the chipped and non-chipped keys.

I had a key cut that would just open the door and i keep that in my wallet. It was just a standard blank and only cost about $5. Any "good" locksmith should have a Toyota blank.

Agreed! Had two myself, the first took a Land Rover head-on and I still walked away from the accident. It was why I bought the second. Unfortunately, it was German-specs and I could not bring it back to the States...

I got my flat key at Wal-Mart. And yours should have car with a plastic wallet key that looks like a credit card.

I happen to manage an Ace Hardware store. We do a pretty good job of cutting keys. My store has a 97% accuracy rating on key reproduction.
Customer surveys say so anyway lol.

I've tried several WalMarts without success (although they were able to do a flat key for my Jeep). There is a new Toyota dealership not far from where I work, I am going to stop by there on my way home and see what they can do. If not, then I will try ACe Hardware, although there is only one left in all of San Antonio and it's not that close to where I live or work!

Cheers! M2
