free air subs in a ported box?

I've got a pair of 400W 4 ohm 15" pioneer subs me and a friend just ripped out of a truck he bought a few weeks ago. Can we put these in a sealed box? What is the best way to mount these? They are going to end up in the trunk of my little brothers car. Heading out to Circuit City and see if I can pick up an amp for these during the liquidation sale. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? THx

Free air subs are not meant to fit in small boxes... infact they are built to work with just a board that separates the front and back waves. Which is essentially like running a sealed box that is the size of a bedroom/attic/crawl space (though in a car its usually more like 10-20cuft).

the suspensions on them just are meant to be in ported boxes... depending on the T/S specs on the subs you have.... IT MAY WORK... or it may rip itself apart and sound like trash at the same time... hard to say.

I would need to know some values like the...

Qts
Qms
Qes
Vas
Re
Fs

others that help:
Cms
Mms
Le
Sd

also known as Thiele/Small parameters... without those we can't really give you any ideas other than... Just make a battle board and DON'T let the front and back waves meet (otherwise you won't get much bass at all).

hmmm..... I'm not sure what any of those things are that you asked for. But we have an old pos ported box that needs a few repairs. Gonna see how that sounds. What do those abbreviations stand for? I'll see if I can find something on them. I think the model numbers ts-w30f and ts-w302f. When we got them out they were two different subs lol. Someone had just crammed down in the side panels hooked up to a 300W Boss amp.

ts-w30f = 400W/100Wrms 4ohm 12"

ts-w302f = 500W/160Wrms 4 ohm 12"

that's about all the info I can really find on these things, not sure how old they are. Thx for any info or advice you throw my way though! Really appreciate it!

found one of them...

Model : TS-W302f
Use : Free-air
Ohms : 4
Freq : 20-3000Hz
Qts : 0.481
Qes : 0.494
Fs : 33.4
Xmax : 6mm
Vas : 3.730
SPL : 94dB 1M/1W

once again... I suggest you keep it away from a ported box.
You'd prolly be better off selling these on e-bay.. and buying new subs, meant for a ported box.

There is a side view of what this pos box looks like. My bro has never done any car audio before and doesn't have alot of cash. We put them in that box and ran some speaker wire from my amp while it was just sitting on the ground in the garage and it really didn't sound too bad. I am going to make him upgrade some day, but for now these sounded a hella lot better than I thought they would.

depending on budget, you may want to look into Elemental Designs if looking for a small box ported sub

Budget is tight... I'm actually tearing down the box he got with them and building a smaller one that will fit in his trunk. Trying to help my bro out as much as possible but I'm no expert yet.

If I'm doing two separate chambers. With a slot port in the middle for each one. How wide should the port be? 1 inch?
