USAA or AMEX car buying service? 2009 Yaris 5 dr hb auto $13099
I have credit cards with USAA and AMEX and both offer a free car buying service that are the same (identical platform). You put in what you want (model/options/etc.) and it gives you a price including the deductions for the current applicable incentives and the name of the closest dealer that will honor the price. For a 2009 Yaris 5 dr h/b automatic, bone stock, it gave me a price for $13099. I was wondering if this is a competitive price and/or has anybody used this service? Does that include the destination or delivery charges?(I think that is $720). It says the invoice price is $13649, the MSRP is $14025, and my member price is $13849 ($200 above invoice) With the $750 incentive my price is $13099 plus ttl. Thanks.

I had explored the COSTCO car buying service in 2004 while looking for a Dodge truck. They sent me to GO Dodge's fleet manager. He gave me one price that was really no bargin at all. I ended up getting the same truck for $3,000 less at another dealer using their news paper sale price ad.
Last year when buying a CR-V for my wife I checked out a privet car buying service. They would check all the dealer's invoices and give you the very best price. I was able to save $1,200 by not using his service. It was supposed to have been a hassle free experience with the service. However, he turned out to be more pushy and ruthless than a lot of salesmen that I have dealt with. These services are a great way to get a starting price. Use their numbers and go to the dealer and see who really has the best price. It might take more of your time, however if you save a weeks worth of wages it is worth the trouble.

I also used the Costco buying service after getting the local dealer's Internet price. Surprisingly, they came back with very much the same price but with a $575 destination charge. Of the 4 local dealers, they were pointing to the same one that I had inquired with.
When I pressed the dealer on it, (why wasn't the Costco price even lower) they claimed that the difference was the disclosure in the Costco price. Had I walked in with just the Internet price, there was about $750 in destination and other fees waiting to be added on at signing. Last May, the price on my 3dr manual LB was $12550. It has the cold weather package (required here) which included 15in wheels. Otherwise, it has no options or power accessories of any kind. Since you are getting 5 doors and the automatic, that would seem to be about the right price. |

I like the ideal of using the Carmax new car price quotes as leverage at a local dealer. They have the 5 dr h/b with auto and power and cruise for $13200 advertised online. I didn't know carmax sold new cars. Why are their prices so much lower?

Do yourself a favor and e-mail dealers for quotes as well...I got a lower price than anything you posted for a fully optioned 09 2dr automatic that just came off the truck.

I went to the carmax site and found out what they were selling their Yarises for. Then I emailed local Toyota dealers and asked if they could match the offer. One did and I got a fully loaded 5 door lift back for 14, 898. It was around 1500 off of the sticker. I looked the other day and the have a 650 rebate.

I used USAA to purchase my car. They told me the place to go and I didn't have to haggle the price. Over $750+ was cut off the top w/n 5 sec of telling them I was a USAA member. The only haggling was my trade-in.
Well worth using USAA to not deal with the price.

I had no idea that AMEX offered that kind of service, that's really cool. I just tried it out on their website and it looks like they offer a savings of about $435, which isn't bad. My guess though is that you could get more off the car if you haggled with the dealership. If you went in with the AMEX price, that's all they would offer you and you should be able to save more than that off a new one. Also, do a trade-in if possible, it could potentially save you $600+ on taxes alone. Good luck!
