Base Honda Fit only $800 more than base Yaris. Why is that?

First, I know the Fit vs. Yaris topic has been discussed here quite a bit. I'm not asking about which one is better.

I'm simply curious why the base Fit (LX, 6sp manual) is only $800 more than the base Yaris (L, 5sp manual)? A lot of folks think the Fit has more features than the Yaris, as I understand. (Whether you/I care about those features is for another thread!) It seems that for that $800, you're getting more stuff. How does component costs, labor costs, etc. come in to play here?

^^^^^ If anyone actually purchases a base '15 Fit (especially a manual transmission one) for the sticker price (or less), I'd be interested in hearing about that.

My local dealer is selling one for ~$150 under sticker from what I can tell.

Building a car in France for North America vs. building a car in Mexico for North America.

Honda is also ruthless in their pursuit of cost reduction for components from suppliers. I can't speak for Toyota--we don't make any Toyota parts yet--but the Honda parts we make undergo significant scrutiny for every last mill (thousandth of a dollar) of savings before production approval.

I agree that there is likely significant cost savings associated with NAFTA vs. countries with organized labor.

I saw a Fit one day and would be hard pressed to drive one for free, would rather make payments on my Yaris than drive a Fit for free.

Very ugly styling to me.

. Yeah, in the right color, I actually like the styling of the '15 Fit better than older ones. I have some caveats (currently) re the quality control of the '15, but getting one for free (even if the value counted as income and one had to pay tax on that) would make up for that concern .

I think the '15 Fit looks better, too. Quality issues aside, where do I sign up for a free one? I'll take any colour!

Almost 90% of car reviews by outfits like Edmunds dismiss small cars with distain! Like "You poor slob if all you afford to drive is one of these things!"

This. Totally. Exactly.

This is one reason why I started Subcompact Culture. Because not everyone who drives a small car does it because the have to.

I test drove a base '15 Fit last month and it has good power for this category. The standard backup camera is a nice touch too. But I paid nearly half for the '13 Yaris I bought a couple weeks ago, and having no car payment on a great car is worth way more to me than a feature here or there.

Give men a Free Fit and I will sell it for $$$$$ and keep driving my Yaris!

Reason: I want a two door model and Fit only comes with four (too small for me to get in and out) I don't believe there is any other small car sold with the two door option.

Also Im not believing that $800 difference thing. (that may be wrong of me)
