SPEEDO Question

I only now just remembered to ask this...been meaning to for quite sometime.

the entire instrument gauge cluster I'll say IPC for short is it mounted facing directly back? I noticed tonight while driving the wife's car and she said it is facing straight back...any reason why not have some sort of bracket to aim it at the driver to get a more accurate speed reading?

I'm just wondering as between me who drives the yaris MAYBE once a month or less, I would say the needle was on the 50 mph mark but the wife would see it a little behind...

^^^SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE....

HERE IS THE JIST::

any reason why the IPC is not angled at the driver for better judging of speedometer?

you're looking at at the "edge" of the needle.. i'm pretty sure toyota has it lined up to look "correct" from the driver's seat.. and what's 1mph anyway?

I think it's so that Toyota can use the same dash on both right and left hand drives.

yeah I know, what you're describing has been discussed in other threads I'm just curious as to whether or not anyone else thinks it makes a difference as to having it point straigh back instead of at the driver somewhat...

On the original mini, the speedometer/odometer was mounted in the center of the dash as well. This was so that the navigator would have an accurate view of the information displayed during a road race or a rally. The same set up on the new mini and i presume the Yaris pays homage to the old design, besides being an interesting design point for a small, "non descript" econocar

Just to add my two cents, it does not make any difference to me whether it were angled toward me or not. The display is rather large and simple to read. I agree it probably has something to do with the Japanese markets right hand drive orientation and Toyota not having to make different dashes. As pointed out the Echo angled its center pod towards the driver and so does the Saturn Ion.

I very rarely even look at my speedo area, but I have to admit I installed a heads up display on to my windshield right in front of me with tach and speed displayed on it.

I've took apart my console, and set the needle at 50mph. As soon as you gain speed, and stop fully, the tach will reset it self.

Hey, that sounds really cool! Where'd you get it? How'd you install it? Can we see pictures?

While a passanger my wife likes the speedometer in the center. That because she doesn't have to rubber neck to see how fast I am going.

In the old Echo (the Yaris's precesessor), the center-mounted dash gauges WERE actually angled towards the driver.

Personally, I think the look is cleaner facing straight back. I like it better.

Doesnt make a difference to me driving wise. I test drove a Echo before I test drove my Yaris before I bought it. Made no reason difference to me, save for that I like the Yaris's gauges position and shape better.
