starter seems to disengage late

I have searched the forum. Some issues sound exactly like mine. However, the solution suggested did not remedy the problem.

When the engine is cold, as in overnight or 4 to 5 hours, the engine starts, but makes a loud grinding/screeching noise after it starts and the bendix should have retracted. Replaced starter with new Toyota starter. No change until the engine has warmed. I just reinstalled the original starter after 3 months, while I investigate, gather info and recommended troubleshooting tips.

how cold is cold? it's possible you're partially freezing the starter maybe?
