Being a pack rat is a genetic trait and might be treatable with some of the newer generation anti-depressants.

In extreme cases such obsessive compulsive behavior can lead to some pretty bizarre shit. Howard Hughes, for example, owned two homes in Long Beach California for the express purpose of storing glass containers of his feces and urine. Every so often his aides would arrive with boxes filled with the materials, which were stored in vacant spaces in the homes.

You're the first person I've heard to do this sort of thing. I've met many pack rats over the years.

I, for example, have about ten cubic yards of books in my duplex. These includes cast offs from a local college library. Since I was trained in Mathematics I have a large collection of texts in various disciplines. Probably sell them off over time. Math never really changes so they'll keep their value.

In contrast my supply of computer language books I liken to lettuce. They spoil over time. You want to be rich? Write computer books, and as soon as you're done with one, start another.

My Landlord keeps old electronics manuals. He has technical specs on chips that are so old that they're not even offered by second or third sources. They're only worth something to a museum or a paper recycler. I'm thinking about pitching them and replacing the lot with a few CDs of new technology. He'll whine but in time get over it. Might even get him into the 21st century.

This is actually the only thing I collect, otherwise I hate having things. My room is very sparse, my car doesn't have any trash in it, I keep everything organized very well. I hate clutter!

My dad is the pack rat -- drives me and my mom crazy! Gah, turns me inside out just thinking about. I hate thinking about clutter and junk and trash that I just want to throw out. He once took some weights from from someones curb, old rusty disgusting weights, and insisted we needed to keep them. Then I had to find a place to put the gross things. Or I wanted to throw out one or two extremely old plastic/concrete dumb bells because I had gotten us a brand new 25-75lb set, what a mistake. He went into the trash, found em, took em out, and said, "We don't throw out weights, you never know when you'll need them."

He is the typical pack rat, I hate it!

Jingle Jingle! I got keys to the unit (it's a lockdown unit) and keys for our restraint system. And no, we rarely ever use the restraints. My facility is very proud to have a low percent for use of full bed restraints.

O.C.D. (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) comes in many forms. I have a habit of double checking that i've locked doors, including the car, all the time.

OCD can be a good thing.

One evening we were hustling to get some ware out the door. The device used 480 vac for both power and control source energy. The power was being taken off by another member of the team.

I volunteered to remove the 480 control power. I always check to see if the power is on before touching anything, either through a physical disconnect or by tic tracer or meter. If I don't see a break in the line, or I get a confirmation of no trace and no measure, I don't touch.

That evening I was in a hurry and didn't bring either gadget but I felt that compulsion to check, and looking at the source I saw that it was connected to the circuit I was about to disconnect AND it was lit up, hot.

I cussed a bit, put down my tools, shut off and locked out the source, disconnected it at the source and then went back to my task.

OCD can be very good thing when your ass in the sling.

psh.. hey man.. its like the only way i can save my money.. i got over $200 in change in less than a year.. im going to vegas in june for a skincare convention and this money is going towards it... i may have to start putting $5s in my bank though, cuz id like to have at least $1,000... between rental car(we r driving there in a convertible!), hotel, gas, food, stuff to buy at the convention.. at the convention out here, i dropped $200 in an hour, so i need a decent spending pocket...
