Hey all,
I bought my car about 2 months ago now and since buying it have had the Parrot MKi9200 system installed so I can use hands free on my iphone, use a laptop hard drive for music etc.

Since doing so though I've realised I need more bass...

I was wondering if anyone had any ingenious methods of increasing the bass without compromising boot space too much. Has anyone done anything like this or put speakers in the back bits (dunno the tech term :-P) next to the passengers? Also can anyone suggest some good, reasonably priced set ups?

I've looked into those small sub units but I don't really know much about car stereo equipment so don't know what's good and what isn't

There are several different ways to approach your goal.

My experience is to say that you should spend the majority of your budget on the installation rather than equipment. Personally I don't enjoy sniping at brand vs brand posts. It never really pays off. It is much like the Chevrolet versus Ford arguments.

What is your budget? How much space are you willing to give up? What brands are YOU comfortable with?

You seem to be looking at the fire and forget type of woofer enclosures. You might also look into Bazooka/SAS for more options.

I see that the cheapest you're looking at is right around $195 American. As I'm remembering, I think I can hook up with a nice little PB ASA 400.2 amp for around $115 (that'll give you potentially 400 Watts), perhaps a lower end 12" like the PB PS12 for $40. Perhaps, $50 more for the MDF, carpeting, wiring, fusing, screws, silicone...I can make my own sealed or vented enclosure that would rock. We've spent $155...a litle elbow grease and you can save some SERIOUS money!

I'm sure Taln has a slight alternative he could come up with for around $150 on up...

Honestly, space seems to be a premium concern here. What are you willing to give in the way of space? This space issue will help determine your budget. Are you willing to make an enclosure yourself?

Here's an example of oh...perhaps $25 of MDF and one's own labor:

Yeah, I know it's not a $40 woofer. Add another zero and you'd be closer. Still, the point isn't about the amount you spend on the woofer itself. Hand me that $40 woofer and concentrate on the enclosure. If you're willing to spend an afternoon, $25 worth of MDF will go a long way. It's a reconstruction of a home audio type of downfiring enclosure for a vehicle. Nice little 1 1/2" front baffle with the plate hiding the mounting screws. Oh, also sorry for the incomplete pics. As I remember, my camera's battery died on me in the middle of that enclosure construction. While not being what you want for your Yaris, the point is about you spending time on this yourself and saving a few $$.

Remember that a box could come out if the space was needed. A proper box, Ported or not will give greater results IMO. I have a Kaption box which isin't to big, but rocks. It can come out if I ever needed the space that badly.

space is the key really, id be willing to raise the boot floor to around the hight of the tailgate but the lower the better really. my limit on price would probably be around £200-250 at a push which is about $330-410 at current rates but $150 sounds A LOT nicer ;-) can spend the extra money on other stuff then.

as for brand that is the main reason for posting here. I dont know anything when it comes to car speaker brands, but Im more than will to use unbranded speakers so long as i know someone thinks they are good.

I would be willing to build the enclosure myself, love a bit of DIY, but I would need to get advice on that as I know anything about the does and donts of such a project.

ive seen the word 'ported' a lot in reference to subs, at risk of showing how little i know what does ported mean and what does it 'do'?

ported=louder, sometimes slightly less accurate reproduction, and normally means bigger enclosures. A sealed enclosure will leave more boot space

The box has a port(hole), rather than sealed. Ported boxes are bigger.

ah ok, in that case Im probably not looking for ported, I assume a low (in height) sub wouldnt be ported? or am I thinking to literally? I know a box could be removed but id prefer to have something I can just leave in rather than remove when i take me and my housemates shopping if that makes sense.

Anyone know measurements etc of a yaris boot (2001)? Might make a 3D model to see what kinda heights I can achieve and how it would look.

Yeah...Vented enclosures take up a bit more space than sealed for the most part. With sealed you'll be looking at needing a bit more power to kick the woofers to the same output. Still, you'll have a nice, easy to build, clean sounding enclosure.

As for raising the boot...why not make something off to the side? You can put terminals on it to detatch easily.

on ported. does the port need to be in any particular location i.e. behind the speaker etc? side pods do also sound like a good option. which do you think would produce the better outcome?

I have this one in my Expedition and it great... In the Yaris I think it would sound sick... Plus I bought mine from Harmon Kardon and it only set me back $130. Of course it's not for impressing the people on the street with your music.

you think the original is good enough? dont need 2 or t for a good sound? everything is so cheap in the states! cheapest ive found the original for over here is £150 which is around $250 :-(

I just know what I like... The sound you are looking for may have different requirements. I went for an efficient package, flexibility, clear bass without being boomy, and flexibility. Now if I could have gotten a II for close to the price of the BassLink, I would have gotten that one, it has more options (expansion that I probably won't use anyway.)
