My new(used) Yaris

Hi folks. Just got a 2007 Yaris with 36,000 miles for $8000.00. It's red, auto, 2 door hatch, A/C, CD and has 15" steel wheels/covers. Not sure what the trim level? Base model, I guess. Found the forum searching for a service manual pdf. Lots of useful information here. I love the cruise control mod and will be doing that asap. The owners manual is pretty short on service info, so the DIY section here is going to help alot. Anything in particular I should know about this car? This is my first car forum, but I am a member of quite a few sportbike/supermoto forums.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum!

You got a great deal!!!

I bought my Yaris used, as well, 2007 same as yours (paid quite a bit more though).

There was a recall on these for center pillar sound insulator (there is a thread on here about that, if you search). It's no big deal, and if it wasn't already taken care of by the previous owner, you'll be getting a notice in the mail from Toyota. Just take it to the dealer and they'll do it for you, no charge. Takes about an hour.

Otherwise, I'm not aware of any problem. Myself, I've grown to love the car, and I'm one of the very few who still drive stock ;) Small performance mods are coming, when finances allow, hopefully soon .

How about you? Do you plan on keeping her stock? Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? Do you have a rear windshield wiper? just trying to figure out what trim.

I have never left anything stock, it's a problem I have. Mods will be limited to making the car a better commuter. The cruise control mod is top of the list. The car has auto tranny and rear wiper. Book price was $10,500, so when I found it for $8000 I jumped on it. Thanks to all for the welcome and info.

I found this info as to trim level...
The Liftback comes in just one base trim level which has air conditioning, tilt steering wheel and intermittent wipers. The Convenience Package adds AM/FM/CD with MP3 jack, rear defroster and 15-inch wheels while the Performance Package adds ABS, power windows/locks/mirrors and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat that also reclines and slides fore and aft to optimize passenger or cargo room.

And this about storage space...
The Liftback has three gloveboxes — two on the passenger side and one on the driver side, a benefit of the center-mounted instruments. To optimize passenger and legroom, the Liftback also features reclining rear seats that slide nearly 6 inches fore and aft.

I had done no real research to speak of on the car and only bought it because my commuter died. The Yaris fit my requirements, small, fuel efficeint, affordable and reliable, so I guess it's an impulse buy made out of necessity. The more I learn about the car, the more I like it. It reminds me of my first car, a 1988 Ford Festiva. I loved that car.

The first (and easiest) mod you should do is pop the cap over the bolt on your rear wiper and remove the little tab. That'll allow you to pull the wiper all the way out to clean the back window (it only lifts a few inches with the tab).

The second mod is the $12 exhaust tip from Walmart. It's the larger one they sell, and it not only looks better than the stock exhaust pipe but it actually adds a little "growl" to the car!

The third mod should be frameless wipers, but this requires a little work as few companies make a 14" one for the passenger side. However, you can buy a 16" one and cut an inch of both sides. It works really well.

There are threads on all of the above, search for them if you need more info. Otherwise, enjoy your Yaris, it is a great little car!

Oh, and since you have an auto, be careful not to accidentally kick it out of drive (D) into third (3), as it will have a detrimental effect on your gas mileage! However, you can intentionally shift down to third when decelerating to kick in the DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off)

Cheers! M²
