Engine buzz under load?

Since I am relatively new to Yaris and don't always know what's normal and what's not...
Whenever I accelerate, somewhere around 2000 rpm my engine sound changes. It gets this buzzy component to it. It's steady and is not a rattle or clank or tap-tap, just a steady buzz.
If I just rev up while standing the engine sound remains a consistent purr.

The car is 3 years old but very low mileage - 25000 km (~15000 miles).

Normal?

Thanks.

I'd say a constant muffled buzz. If I had the radio on at a reasonable level I would not notice it.
none of your sounds match really.

Just test drove a colleague's Echo. Found the same sound. It was less prominent but it was there. Her Echo sounds a little quieter altogether maybe that's why there was it was less.

Anyhow, I will chalk it up as normal for this engine.

I have the same thing on mine. I've never owned a car with a timing chain, and I don't think you're supposed to hear a timing chain, but this is how I'd describe it. It's what I think timing chain noise would sound like.

The timing chain on my car is audible as well. It's a whirring noise that gets faster as engine rpm goes up. It sounds a lot like the whine of an alternator charging hard if you have ever heard that.

Cheers.

No. Chains sound like this maxima. You can hear it most as the engine rpm is coming down after the throttle snap. A whine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paPZ-...eature=related

In his case the plastic the chain rubs against is worn or broken off the tensioner and is now on the metal so is louder than normal. Our yarii chains are a little noisy but seems normal.
Cheers.

so what am I hearing then...mine sounds much like in the link I posted, except that I have to be accelerating, not just revving.

EDIT: although I must say that the noises in these 2 videos are not that far apart tone wise, esp accounting for the variations of the recording equipment/environment

Dropped by a dealer this morning. They tightened up exhaust heat shields, but that didn't make much difference.
Also showed it to my mechanic. He pronounced it normal, and said that what I am hearing is a sound of the air intake. I drove around this this in my head and I agree that this sound may be described as air rushing in through a small opening. Psychology is a funny thing :)
He did mention that the intake design on these is 'tricky' (he said that in russian, but that's the best translation)

Yuriy,

I have the same sound.

What exactly did mechanic say about the intake? (I speak some Russian)

Pavel,

He said "это нормально, я пытался разобраться и там интейк хитрый." Which is pretty close to my english translation :)
He said that 1.8 engines had the sound as well.

The more I drive it the more I hear this as whooshing air.
Also, look at the shape of the throttle body gasket:

I can totally see this mesh at the bottom making interesting noises and kinda concur with my mechanic.

Thanks ))

I have a 2 yo car with circa 40k on the odomoter and hear this strange sound as well. I am glad I found this thread cause my mechanical skills do not go beyond installing car speakers.
