Consumer reports is good for a few things. I've stopped reading their reviews/articles. I still check the reliability records. I think its still one of the best ways to get an idea about the quality of the car you are looking at - straight from the users mouth. It isn't always dead on, but it does help you get an idea of how many problems you're gonna have with any particular car.
