Ok. Let's think about this... using an estimate of 140 million tax returns for 2008 (based on 2006 data of 134mil. I couldn't find an accurate figure for 2008) and the cost of the 3bil CFC program and assuming the burden is equally distributed amongst tax payers we each will pay $21.43 for this program. Quit yer bitchin.

So, now take that 3bil and divide it by the amount of the rebate to determine how many cars get junked as a result of this program (I can't find any actual numbers so this is the easiest way to figure it out.) Let's use the lower rebate number - $3500.00 - to provide a high estimate of the number of cars junked - this works out to about 857,000 cars that will get junked. The number of registered passenger vehicles on the road is 251mil. So what's the percentage of used cars that will go missing never to be used again? .003%

I suppose I can understand the emotional aspect of it as Americans definitely have a love affair with automobiles. I just wish the people expending energy to bash this program would be more concerned about the millions of people that have no healthcare or go bankrupt due to illness or simply die because they can't afford a doctor.

Hmmm... dead car <-> dead person... Priorities people, priorities.
