Dont think i've needed to adjust a headlight on any of my cars in 20 years..

I don't think it's for actual alignment, but rather have different alignment settings depending on driving situations much like how BMW headlights works.

Our Smart had this adjustment via a switch on the dashboard even though they were just halogen lamps.
