Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I wanted to add that it is possible to remove the upper oil pan on the 1NZ without removing the engine from the vehicle. Note that while you can access the rod bearings and the crankshaft bearings (probably), you would need to remove the head in order to pull the pistons out without removing the engine from the vehicle.

Here are some pictures of a 2002 Prius 1NZ-FXE with the upper oil pan removed. It was actually pretty easy, and I didn't have to remove the timing cover (although I will have to remove it in order to reseal it properly). I left it on so that I wouldn't be working under the car without the engine mounts in place.
