Is the cop really going to ask you to turn it on?
I think they have better things to do.
Now if they see it on while driving past you, that's another story, but even then I don't think they'll bother you.

I often see vans or large cars tailgating me trying to see what I'm watching.
wow that's just dangerous. do those vans ever get pulled over for tailgating?

No, what's more dangerous is driving while watching in your own car. I don't have a problem with merely typing in an address into Nav, but watching a movie requires a lot of attention.
Don't give me the old line, "yeah, but I've seen this movie so many times already," either.

please stay safe.

how would that work? if he pulled you over for that how could he tell if is working under legal circumstances...he'd ahve to get in teh car with you adn have you drive and see if your tv/dvd player turns on. I doubt he would do that too because he wouldn't just leave his car unattended.

i think it's just based on if it works without the parking brake being used

I've got a full surround DVD system in my car. But I have it installed "by the book" so you can't see the DVD play unless the e-brake is on. My Panasonic deck lets you play DVDs while driving, but it cuts the video. So, if I wanted to, I could play some of my music DVDs.
I like driving somewhere at night with a coffee and a bag of chips just to watch a movie in the car.

nah.

sometimes I'll set cruise control for a couple mph under the speed limit just to teach them a lesson. eventually they'll honk wildly and swerve around me.
the other times I'll tap my brakes just to "make sure they work"
