I'm interested to find out more about why brake pads/shims shifting can cause this "klunk" sound.

because they can shift, theres enough space to make a bit of noise. i have used brake lube on the shims and inserts on highlanders, corolla's, tc's, camry's, avalons, rav4's...and so on from this complaint.

Our Saturn used to do that too. It is the brake pads, don't worry about the noise at all. The brake pads have to move inside the caliper, otherwise how would the brakes work. Sometimes there is just more room for play, but the pads will never come out or fall out of place in any way. You're perfectly fine.

Would the brake lube be included on a brake cleaning/adjustment at the dealer?

if your car's service is given to the oil changer to do ...no; If you request a technician to do it and ask to talk to the tech and explain the problem then most likely they will take the time...

but thats just me talking from 'flat rate' experience

Thanks for the replies. I will have them look at it next time I'm in. I've been changing my own oil since the first two changes. Was wondering if I missed anything in all the lost post about this.
