pretty satisfied with mine... except for the horror i'm having with my sound system...
outterhere: what kind of swift did you have? i had a 93 swift sedan with power windows, power side mirrors and power door locks.. with a 1.6L G16A engine.... I orginally wanted the new "Daweoo" suzuki swift that came out in 2004.. but it wasn't a very good drive... the feeling of the car was just not right. But then, i have a sedan... it has less than 1/2 of the storage than the hatchback.... aside from the little details you can name from the yaris... i sure could tell you long on my 93 swift. |

This one; eh... The Swift's design was absolutely sublime; nothing extra and nothing superfluous. I almost feel like they added the cup holders and bottle holders (notice that you aren't supposed to cross-utilize the two; little signs tell you not to) and coin holders and MP3 jacks and white plastic next to grey plastic just to make you feel you're getting more for your money; feels "busy." And then little things like the seat belt getting hung up on the seat lever, and what's with the hatchback? I have to unlock it to use it (not so the Swift)? What's with all the little velcro strips? And everything falls out (oh, yeah; I'm supposed to buy the "net" to hold stuff in)? No excuse for this; bad design. Those of you who love it, all I can say is: obviously you never owned a Swift.

bigger boot , more leg room for back seat passengers, better MPG, If you hate your yaris so much sell it and go spend the extra $$$ on a smaller swft. ![]() OH as far as the hatch needing to be unlocked , you should have bought your yaris with the power package. Skimp on price skimp on Quality. Last edited by 1NZYaris1; 12-09-2008 at 05:51 PM. |

I would say you just bought the wrong car at the wrong moment.... Your 2000 swift was probably more reliable than my 93, but this is very relative to many different things... so let's not talk about it anymore. Quote:
I'm surprised that he had no mentioned anything about the center seat belt that hangs from the roof.

If I could add my 2 cents for a second.
I have looked for a yaris with the specs i wanted for about a year. It was secondhand, i am the second owner. Yes, it gets from pointA to pointB efficiently, and such. Although I complain that the interior looks cheap, mine came w/o side airbags, and the 2009 HB's look awesome, i should'nt complain. This car replaced my 2004 wrx wagon, and that was my first new car purchase. It was one of those gotta have cars, well for me anyway. Things needed to be replaced, and i have about 45k invested in my wrx including purchase. It sits at home, driven only a few times a month, including auto-x. That said, the yaris is a great daily commute car, albeit a no-frills economobile. But with the few mods i have planned, it should stay with me, until i can find a newer LB. The biggest concern people should consider is maintenance in the next 4-5 years. How will the yaris hold up, AS a cheap entry level car? P.S.- I too love suzuki swifts. Just not the POS that they sold here in the US. |

I virtually never carry more than one passenger and would be driving a Smart today if it weren't for the fact that I currently do a lot of interstate driving... Hence, the tiny, close-to-the-road Swift suited me perfectly and just seemed so much more "user-friendly," somehow. I agree it will be interesting to see how the Yaris holds up over the long haul. I can't see it lasting 10+ years??? But I'll keep an open mind... Sorry to sound so negative; obviously there are things I like about the car (I agree it's cute as can be), or I wouldn't have chosen it over all the others available... I guess I just wish they hadn't discontinued and then altered the Swift (SRX is way too big and expensive now), but que sera, sera. So of all the subcompacts available (and I just did another cars.com search), Yaris still rules the "cheap, small car"... Last edited by otterhere; 12-10-2008 at 10:27 AM. |

Ottohere, why did you not buy a car you liked or maybe considered a Suzuki Aerio. I did I like the hatch version and they are quite popular here where I live. I bought my Yaris used and I was on a budget but that doesn't mean I will buy something I am not absolutely sure of.
By the way I love it, its my first toyota I have always had mitsubishi or Honda. It is very reliable and gets me great gas mileage. I like cupholders and compartments where I can put stuff in. Plus I can chirp the tires in second gear. haha |

I haven't taken it in (can't spare the car right now), but sounds like the mpg is pretty typical, based on responses received; sounds to me like 40 is very atypical and the result of "extreme" driving (extremely careful), which I'm not currently practicing. Also willing to give it some time (haven't hit 200 yet) to see if it improves before starting the whole "taking it to the dealer" thing...

What do you mean you removed it; where are those strips supposed to attach, and what's their purpose??? I can fit so little back there, really, that I'm tempted to just fold down the back seat (don't use) and make it all storage, accessible from the front doors. If you saw a photo of the Swift interior, you'd see just how unnecessarily COMPLICATED the design of the Yaris interior is in comparison. The exterior, no complaints, though. Cute... Although that antenna is going to make it hard to throw a kayak on top...

I looked at several pictures of the swift and it didn't seem to have that much more room in the back, but I could be mistaken, anyway, if you don't use the backseats then put them down, that's what I've done all week, although I usually prefer having them up, I rarely carry anything that wouldn't fit in the hatch, unless I take the dog out. I don't think the yaris is a bad car, it just doesn't seem to be the right car for you, it happens, but if you really can't get used to it, I would advise you to get rid of it, it will save you a lot of heartache and stress. |

I've owned toy's in the past that ran nearly forever without many break downs.
I refuse to spend $400 on a car payment, just to get me to work and back. It's much easier to budget my monthly income driving a toyota. I love my Yaris. |

Agree. The reason I bought a Yaris is for good, reliable daily transportation. Throw some springs on the car with a lip spoiler and it looks good too! |
