OMG; beware going "just to talk"; talk about what? Get the price in writing (on e-mail), then go buy it. You can surely get the rebate AND financing; just not their super-duper rate financing (which I'd be dubious about anyway). Definitely take the rebate.

Now, wait a minute, there is nothing wrong with going to look at the cars, touching them, smelling them, sitting in them, and going for a test drive! They don't hold a gun to your head, at the dealership, you know, and you CAN walk away..

But they'll be mad if you don't buy after "wasting" their time; oh, will they be mad. Are you man enough, LOL?

They won't be mad. Happens to them all the time. Just be polite and if they are nice ask for them when/if you to come to really buy the car.

You can defintely get the rebate if you finance elsewhere. I did.

No, no, no... they won't be mad!

Just say, for example "I am shopping for a car, but I haven't yet completely decided between the Yaris and the Fit. Do you have time for a test drive? After the test drive you can ask your questions if you want, but don't sign anything, just say you want a couple of days to think about it.

Or you can schedule a test drive on the phone, sometimes that works better. I did that, too, to ensure I wouldn't have to wait for a sales guy to be available to let me drive the car.

You're not obligated to purchase the first car you test drive and they know it. I think I test drove 2 cars, and visited 3 or 4 dealerships before I found my Yaris.

I think it's great that OTTERHERE got a deal by email first, but IMO the test drive should come first. The salesguy will give you a card, and then you can continue the negotiations by phone and email then, if you want, but you should definitely go check out the cars in person BEFORE you close the deal! :)
