Why should this come as a surprise? The smartfortwo is a smaller car, with a smaller engine. Logic dictates that it will obviously get better gas mileage. If your insulted by this, than you should be insulted by any other car that gets better gas mileage than the yaris. Sheesh!

other than the smart and hybrids, there really aren't any.

Those models are only from Europe. I was just making a statement about how there are more cars than just the smart and the prius that get better mpg than the Yaris. They are not necessarily here in the U.S.A., but they do exists, like the ones mentioned on the link.
