When I was a kid my dad did work that required driving his 'big truck' interstate. The thing held something like 300 gallons of fuel in three tanks, which of course takes a while to fill. The pumps at the station where he always filled it didn't have those little levers (IIRC few did back then) so he'd widdled a little piece of wood to fit exactly under the lever and hold it in place. When he was done he'd stick it up in the mortar lines between the bricks behind the sign telling people not to smoke and to turn off their engines. The station is no longer there (it's been an empty lot ever since they required double walled tank upgrades, which they couldn't afford, so they closed), but it's an interesting memory.
