Last night the GF & I fit a 60wide 32tall 23deep table in it. I don't suggest anybody try to do the same, We had to slide the seats all the way up, but it can be done. On another note... I think hybrid with caps would be a horrible idea... caps don't hold much energy. an electric motor would drain them too fast for them to be of any use. Honestly, I don't want to see the yaris go hybrid... that'll just raise the cost $5,000 or more. Keep it simple, keep it cheap. I'd like to see rear disc brakes tho. |

I'm pretty sure the Yaris will be refreshed/redesigned for 2011.
The 1NZ-FE has had a decent run in the Toyota family. The 1.8 would be great, the 1.3 would be great, too.

I recently took a long trip through the mountains with two adults and the rear of the car FULL of luggage and gifts for the people that we'd be visiting (seats folded down and full) and it did just fine except for one extremely steep pass (single lane road kind of steep) where I couldn't go fast enough to get out of second gear, but that was the exception. (btw, I still managed 41 MPG on that tank even after that climb and doing 80 MPH on the flat sections) On one vacation we went out in a Peugeot w/ a 1.3L engine w/ an automatic transmission and drove through the mountains with four adults (one of which was big enough to count as two) and luggage and it did just fine... |

I dont think the Yaris will ever see a 6speed manual unless it becomes standard option on almost every car in the market. If they wont opt a 6 speed for a TC, it wont come on a Yaris...plain and simple. Plus, the idea is to keep this the cheapest car that Toyota makes, not slap it with so many options that you could easily buy a Camry for the same price.

The 2011 Yaris is going to be all new and based on the iQ platform. It's supposed to be out late 2010 and it is said to have a hybrid variat. The current Yaris is said to be too costly for Toyota to convert to a hybrid as an option.

if this is true, i'm not sure there is a way they can stuff a 1.8 in the iQ chassis, I just don't think it's designed for such large amount of weight up front. so perhaps the 1.3l + hybrid will become popular?

Does anyone know the life of the average battery in a Hybrid? If they have a say 7 year life span, what is done to re-equip the car, or dispose of the batteries? I like the hybrid ideas in general better then pure electric, a diesel electric hybrid would seem to be the best till Hydrogen really becomes a usable and convenient fuel. A diesel Yaris? Too much mulla I supose.

what id really love is the 1.3, 5 speed manual would work fine with just a slight tweek to make the final gear a bit higher, then an option where there is no back seat, just a lower floored cargo area. keep the weight down to 2200 lbs and i think we'd be looking at epa 32/42 or better.(which under current testing methods would be very good). kind of like the old honda crx but with more room.

However, in the 1980s, there were cars with tiny, fuel-efficient engines that got 45+ MPG. Hybrid Shmybrid!

2010 PRIUS has a 1.8 in it now so maybe the idea of that motor isn't too far off...

don't forget there's also a 1.6L 3ZR-FE engine too, as used in the Yarii in China...

FYI, I wrote an editorial on whether or not Americans will buy small-displacement (e.g. uner 1.5-liter) engines:

I just don't understand how a 6 speed manual gearbox would be a more expensive option than that of a hydraulic transmission. |
