Children certainly have control over their volume, and its definitely a matter of respect. Don't get me started on harleys.

Please don't vilify stereos, because you choose to let them bother you more than any of the other sounds you are accosted with on a daily basis. I turn my stereo down in neighborhoods, but I'm not going out of my way to keep everyone in the world from hearing it.

In order of frequency, things I get woken up by:

1)harleys
2)kazoo exhausts on cars
3)the marching band at the high school at 6:45 AM
4)lawnmowers at 7 AM
5)loud stereos
You're entirely missing the point. Your logic as stated above is that two wrongs make a right. It's inconsiderate to play music excessively loud on one's stereo system to the point it causes other people anguish. Not to mention the damage done to the ears (i.e. when you have Tinnitus in your ears at age 50, you'll understand.)
To address your list: Responsible homeowners have a need to cut grass (they can't spend $$ on a stereo system because they have a family to support and mortgage to pay). Most places don't have laws governing exhaust noise for 2 wheeled motor vehicles. And marching band is a publicly supported and funded activity sponsored by the school district. #2, and #5 are subject to fines and other regulatory action as they are a complete nuisance.
