The 2011 Yaris is going to be all new and based on the iQ platform. It's supposed to be out late 2010 and it is said to have a hybrid variat. The current Yaris is said to be too costly for Toyota to convert to a hybrid as an option.

if this is true, i'm not sure there is a way they can stuff a 1.8 in the iQ chassis, I just don't think it's designed for such large amount of weight up front. so perhaps the 1.3l + hybrid will become popular?

Does anyone know the life of the average battery in a Hybrid? If they have a say 7 year life span, what is done to re-equip the car, or dispose of the batteries? I like the hybrid ideas in general better then pure electric, a diesel electric hybrid would seem to be the best till Hydrogen really becomes a usable and convenient fuel. A diesel Yaris? Too much mulla I supose.

what id really love is the 1.3, 5 speed manual would work fine with just a slight tweek to make the final gear a bit higher, then an option where there is no back seat, just a lower floored cargo area. keep the weight down to 2200 lbs and i think we'd be looking at epa 32/42 or better.(which under current testing methods would be very good). kind of like the old honda crx but with more room.
