obscure? When he said it in transformers 1, he was acknowledging the cartoon, of which "more than meets the eye" was part of the theme song and the tag line...

Wow I had totally forgotten that it was in the theme song but as soon as I read your post it flashed back into my memory.

Okay so maybe it wasn't obscure, unless you only watched the first movie or couldn't remember the original show like me

I think so. The transformers show I watched had robots that turned into dinosaurs and was on the WB cable 13 or something like that.

If I saw the original transformers I believe it was on tape... lol tape... oh how far technology has come.
