I use simple green because its safe to use on pretty much everything. I'm a 7 year detailing vet. I wouldnt use it if it wasnt safe.

Sorry about your luck with the wheel. Just take it back to the place you bought it from, make a complaint and they should handle it.
What probably happened (if it started from the hub), the pressure of the lugs pulling the wheel against the hub put alot of stress on the layer of paint/powder coating and caused the crack, which will eventually get moisture under it and flake and move.
