I have never lived anywhere that salt or chemicals were used in the wintertime. For example, here in the Tahoe region we just use sand (which works just fine) due to the environmental impact of the other options.

Imagine my surprise while driving through the New England area last winter and seeing a salt storage dome for my first time. I had to ask someone what they were.

Consider yourself lucky! The new salt brine is even worse. I traded an 03 Outlander when I bought my Yaris and the fuel lines, fuel filler neck and gas tank were all crispy with rust-I probably had a year left before overhauling all of it. Front pipe of exhaust had already rusted off and oil pan was well on it's way. Polymer coated brake lines still looked fine but anything not treated is gone pretty quick! Cars here don't wear out-they rust away.

Oh yeah, and I haven't even touched on the environmental aspects. I know two different families who had settlements after their drinking water and housing values were destroyed by nearby salt sheds.
