Fake alarm light
yeah so i dont have the $$$ to spend on an alarm. BUT i have all these components to build this ->http://www.discovercircuits.com/DJ-C...kecaralarm.htm can i apply this to the yaris (2009)? i am fairly competent with a soldering iron and know my way around wires and such. the only hard part would be locating the wires. but i need to know if this circuit wont freak out the yaris in ANY way at all.
thanks for your input.

Looks like that drawing is using a simple JFET or transistor to switch power to a flashing LED. Only problem is I've never come across a "flashing LED" as in a self-contained unit. Regular LED's are fairly common, so if I were to build this circuit I would use a regular LED driven by a 555 IC timer in astable mode to get the flash effect. Fairly easy circuit to build and the parts are certainly very common. Something like this:
http://wild-bohemian.com/electronics/flasher.html We have our students build these circuits all the time and they last forever. Note: Obviously it would not be a good idea to connect this circuit to your ignition wiring directly but to something that is powered via the ignition switch signal... like your radio. |

why? Is someone really gonna try to break into your car and be scared away by a blinking light? They don't get scared away half the time when real alarm start going off. I would think a viper license plate frame or sticker would be more effective.
If you're good with soldering/electrical, why don't you try to find a cheap used alarm somewhere and make it work? |

I have a fake alarm light. I went through quite a few different LEDs, because most of the flashing LEDs you can find online or at the shop (or at least Radioshack) flash at far too quick a rate to be the slightest bit convincing. (And, of course, half the time the flash rate isn't advertised.) I recommend the Varad LL-RE; it has an adjustable flash rate, draws under 20 mA, and is much, much, much less frustrating than getting one that flashes 100 times a minute.

thanks for the input guys.
ruffstuff :i was previously looking at a timer circuit so ill keep that in mind. supmet: the point of this was that i have all the parts laying around in a box and to keep cost to an EXTREME minimum. i know the people who really REALLY want to get in will do so but what i dont want are the little assholes(we have mostly kids in the neighborhood that will not contribute positively to society) who walk around messing with shit trying to get in my car, so yes i do hope that a small blinking light will scare them however unrealistic that may seem. thanks for the suggestion about the viper sticker i should find a couple of those.

This is too weird....
I have a 2009 LB ( not sport) and I have a blinking dummy alarm LED by the outside edge of the driver's side defrost duct... Am I special or is mine really a self destruct indicator..? |

why not go ahead and build an alarm while you're at it?

Tamago i think i will build an alarm and wire it to a "backseat monkey" that throws stuff at anyone who tries to enter.
seriously though the initial idea was that i literally had these resistors and transistors so my cost would be $ZERO. but that link sex posted looks very interesting. thanks sex i need to look into that one.

You have an immobilizer. The engine can't start without your key.

Hardly. When insurance companies stop giving discounts for car alarms, then they could be considered useless. They don't cut into their profit margin for no reason. Alarms are supposed to be annoying, that's why they are called "alarms" and not "excuseme's"... Scorched Earth! |
