i too am kind of curious if those can be removed and painted and how to go about doing that... i was thinking about color matching some pieces in my interior to the outside and that could be a good addition.

It's mounted with the melted plastic bosses (lots of them). Here's a view from the back (from Crashy's which had the airbag popped):
