I see this as an economic issue not a safety issue. If I can get more mileage and save money at the pump, the cost of new tires will only be more if they offset the fuel costs I don't have to buy. And since I already have 50k miles on my OEM tires and probably will get another 20k more, I am riding on free tires and if I can save even more on gas by increased tire pressure, its not dumb. Its money smart.

The money you save over the life of your 100 dollar tires might just cover your deductible, but will it cover the potential lives lost? Now, at 50lbs I really doubt you'll have an issue...but that's where it starts, it ends upside-down on the freeway after you've gotten complacent with Your "experiments" and normally I'd say it's your life, do with it as you please...but when it comes to driving you have to consider the lives of the people around you, that's what's really at stake here. It's not money smart, it's selfish. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/4199963 Quote:

I have tried 40-50 psi in stock and aftermarket V rated tires. Grip and mileage were slighty better (1-2 mpg) but I am down to 36 psi now, the car just rode too godamn hard. Joints in the interstate were torture, and road noise was up too. I just made a 800 mile round trip at an average of 70 mpg at 37 mpg overall. Thats good enough for me, I think I'm ready for new shocks at 75K miles now, I'm tired of being beaten to death.

40 all the time to get the best balance between grip and MPG

Yeah I think once I get new shocks that will be the best compromise.

You need to climb down off that high horse. Most of the people on here seem to not have any safety impacts and the savings appear to be very common sense. You are more than entitled to your opinion, just as we are entitled to ours. But it isn't selfish....but maybe you don't really understand the meaning of the word.

Here, how about this... "big dave" is too selfish to admit the insignificant gains he may realize in fuel economy pale in comparison to the danger he places himself and those around him in. ETA: You're only running 50 PSI... I've already said the people running 50 are not likely to have any problem, it's the 15+ psi that worries me...so stop arguing with me.

I run 32 psi, and I just checked the mpg at my last fill-up (40.1 mpg) ...all in town driving.
![]() I bet these guys that run 60 psi don't tell their auto insurance agent, the guy mounting their tires, the cops, the guys at the dealership, etc, but they're sure eager to stand high on the soapbox here ...

And that would an opinion, not a fact, since I have been able to safely drive on 50psi for a number of months without any safety issues. Just because you can spell a word and look up the words meaning, doesn't mean you know how to use it correctly. Its hard to take someone seriously when they mangle the English language!
